Derrida was a critic of structuralism.

Deconstruction was not Critical Theory. It was a way to read and interpret texts.
June 05, 2022 at 16:46
Never.
June 05, 2022 at 15:47
Why should Kant be popular in philosophy departments?
June 05, 2022 at 15:40
Kant is very popular today.
June 05, 2022 at 15:30
Yes. I never got much out of Paul de Man.
June 05, 2022 at 14:52
All part of life. I didn't create reality, I decide how to act in it.
June 02, 2022 at 22:20
Not really. I never experienced a moral dilemma.
June 02, 2022 at 22:09
Custom. Like saying hello to strangers or asking how they are.
June 02, 2022 at 22:06
I act in accordance to the situation.
June 02, 2022 at 22:04
Same as it always was. Morality is just conventional practice. Norms.
June 02, 2022 at 22:01
Even aesthetics can make use epistemology. Personally, I equate metaphysics with aesthetics.
June 02, 2022 at 20:05
Perhaps. For philosophers, they are distinct categories.
June 02, 2022 at 19:48
Practical use is not the same as being true.
June 02, 2022 at 19:06
I am in full agreement with you.
June 02, 2022 at 19:06
I probably should not comment on this thread.
June 02, 2022 at 19:03
Good point. Nature for Aristotle was a system of production, of doing something. Not just physical particles moving.
June 02, 2022 at 18:04
I did not read his comment that way. The story of the Garden of Eden is based on the idea that God (the father; the authority) punished humans (childr...
June 02, 2022 at 17:43
Okay, guess we're done.
June 02, 2022 at 17:14
Got it. Now explain what that has to do with the relation of science to metaphysics.
June 02, 2022 at 17:04
Science describes physicality, the movement of particles. It is descriptive. It does not say why or if those movements are meaningful.
June 02, 2022 at 17:01
Then explain it to me. I do not think there are many scientists who think they are doing metaphysics.
June 02, 2022 at 16:57
I am confused by that. His quote would seem to state the oppposite.
June 02, 2022 at 16:52
Lots of things are true that still can be trivial.
June 02, 2022 at 16:41
God is the lawgiver of the universe. No thanks.
June 02, 2022 at 16:36
Yes, a term never used by Arisotle.
June 02, 2022 at 16:33
This may not be apropos of your comment. But I find Quantum Mechanics far closer to how I understand the world than classical, mechanistic physics.
June 02, 2022 at 16:32
Aristotle did not call it "Metaphysics."
June 02, 2022 at 16:21
I would not use "reliable" as a test for truth. There are many trivial and reliable facts.
June 02, 2022 at 16:18
I always find it amusing when people come to a philosophy forum to say physics is really where truth lays.
June 02, 2022 at 15:57
I have no problem reading it and I am not a subscriber.
June 02, 2022 at 15:55
Why indeed. The error began by calling Aristotle's work on "first philosophy" with the title, "Metaphysics." Of course, the name stuck, but like a lot...
June 02, 2022 at 15:36
The term "metaphysics" really has nothing to do with the term "physics." This definition would imply there is something fundamental about physics.
June 02, 2022 at 14:52
Kant critiqued metaphysics. But he reduces metaphysics to epistemology.
June 02, 2022 at 00:58
5. Time machine.
June 02, 2022 at 00:24
"Grammar" gets to be a bit abstract with Wittgenstein. Though he may skirt the charge off linguistic idealism--reality is language--he sometimes treat...
June 02, 2022 at 00:15
Good thread. Metaphysics, to me, is about how you think about the world. Not in terms of truth, but what kind of thing it is.
June 02, 2022 at 00:09
Thank you for your service.
June 01, 2022 at 23:56
Can you explain more what you're referring to? So far the discussion is interesting but a bit vague.
June 01, 2022 at 21:15
What problems do you see Wittgenstein dissolving?
June 01, 2022 at 19:33
Yes, I see now.
June 01, 2022 at 18:22
What is QFT?
June 01, 2022 at 18:20
Sorry, I did not understand your post.
June 01, 2022 at 18:16
Agree. Science is shallow, but useful.
June 01, 2022 at 18:08
Particle in a field. Same thing, isn't it?
June 01, 2022 at 18:07
Depends what one means by nature. For science, it is only the movement of particles.
