Icon for the Site?

Someone mentioned using 180 Proof's avatar for the site -- I like it, but I don't know if 180 does...

Either way, though I must admit my love of Kant -- I've read the critiical series twice, though there are those who do more than my meagre efforts -- I would love to give the face of this forum to somebody who represents an oppressed minority [however much Hanover may protest ;)] like bell hooks?

It ought to be an armchair me thinks. A nice one though.

A picture of Hegel to scare people off.
Jamal October 24, 2015 at 01:34 #695
Well, as you might suspect, Moliere, I'm one of those old-fashioned colour-blind leftists. I don't really go for affirmative action and have a great antipathy to labelling people primarily as de-individualized representatives of an ethnic community. To the extent that I might favour affirmative action socially it certainly wouldn't be in the context of an independent club of amateur philosophers (amateur = for the love). I think it's patronizing and silly. What's the problem: black people hate Kant?

European philosophy is European only in place of origin, not in who's meant to appreciate it, use it and develop it. Like French cheese.

I respect your position and would like to answer more expansively, but, you know, my poor broken arm.

EDIT: But I do agree more attention needs to be paid to philosophers ignored by the tradition, especially if they have been marginalized merely for their ethnicity. (I'm not contradicting myself here, I don't think)
Jamal October 24, 2015 at 01:52 #704
But maybe you should add a poll to this discussion, with a choice of philosophers or other things to use as the favicon.
AbsurdRhetor October 24, 2015 at 02:11 #711
Real talk, I think it should be a symbol instead of a single Philosopher.

As I also brought up this issue, I'd like to throw in my two cents here for bell hooks: oh god no.

Maybe along these lines. I'd go for something simple and modern anyway. No Greeks.

Jamal October 24, 2015 at 06:58 #746
Reply to Baden I'd argue that such icons are even more revealing of philosophical prejudices than pictures of Socrates or Kant, because they assume a mental internalism and an excessively Cartesian philosophy of mind. Some of us don't see thinking as just "in the head".

Clearly there will never be agreement here. :D

I do like Rodin's Thinker partly because it shows the whole person, body and all, in a posture of contemplation. But it's become the cliché of clichés.

I fear this poor chap had a bad result from an MRI.

He should probably get those dots removed. (me speaking from experience)

That URL goes to a web page, not an image. Is the image you want on that page? Which one?

Okay I get it. You have to strip out the query string for those images, i.e., everything after the file extension.

I agree with AbsurdRhetor that it should be a universal symbol instead of a non-related object or single philosopher.

Also, poll added.

Anyway, when we do decide on something, I'll be happy to Photoshop it a bit before sticking it up (at least partly because we don't want to get sued for copyright infringement).

Maybe the "philosopher with busted arm" icon? Something iconic, at any rate. A phoenix (out of the ashes... no, too specific and temporal...)

I saw this in a wonderful cultural history on Nietzsche, and it was just too perfect a moment not to share. :)

I actually like the Hypatia icon. Of course, I would say that, since i suggested it . But it does look nice, and her death is the result of her being familiar with philosophy and actually trying to teach it -- so there's something nice in that.

This is supposed to be Socrates. I guess the artist is emphasising his famed ugliness.

I like Hypatia as well.

What about Diogenes of sinope? I think he can represent the way philosophy can transform your entire life. Although I did fail a marketing class once.
Jamal October 24, 2015 at 17:22 #843
It's Hypatia. F5 to see it if you're still seeing Kant.

How about a simple arrangement of the letters TPF? Whatever font, whatever color, decide upon one to like or live with for about a year so it is consistent across the Internet searches. As it is now, when I quoted a page on TPF on the TPF Facebook page, my options for a thumbnail were Benkei with a beer or nothing. Surely you know which I chose. 8-)
If not, have you become a follower of TPF on Facebook? If not, consider doing so today!

Jamal October 25, 2015 at 16:43 #969
Not really a fan of the initials thing Tiff.

And we should be clear: some people are talking about a logo, but I thought this thread was just about the favicon (though of course they're often the same). The favicon is done. As for a logo and branding, I wouldn't want to be half-assed about it, but I haven't got time for it. In fact, the initials would be okay in a nice font like the one we're using right now in the header (the font is called Lobster), but if we're serious about branding that's out of the question because it's just the default branding of PlushForums: https://plushforums.com/

Not too concerned about it right now. The forum looks pretty nice.

I guess that doesn't solve the problem of what to use right now as the logo on social media.
PhilosopherByChoice October 25, 2015 at 17:07 #972
A symbol seems like a logical choice, however, it does not mean its the best. We can always use a lightbulb and a pi sign as a last resort.
