Unconscious inspiration
Attempting, using scientific methodology, to account for the origin and nature of the human impulse to develop religion – by employing as an example say, the principles of evolutionary biology – could be regarded as an act perhaps similarly futile to trying by means of philosophic methodology to account for a phenomenon like bird-flight! - A methodology fundamentally inappropriate to describing the nature of the phenomenon involved!
- Though at least Virgil’s celebrated attempt at a literal explanation, using the methodology of philosophy, of the latter phenomenon - so inspiring as it is in terms of our human capacity but also so counter-intuitive - resulted, albeit indirectly, in a description equally inspirational - “They can because - They Think they can”!
- But, who ever justifiably suggested that such an answer, so instinctively conscious of the requirement that it needs must reflect the beauty of the idea concerned, shouldst then be accountable to anything so pedestrian as ‘Rationale’?! :)
