Mass Culture

If an actor does a spectacular job playing a role, if a music artist performs a classic song, if an author writes an impressive book, great! Why can't it end at that? Should citizens who want a rational culture be criticizing this hype machine that consigns us to bombardment with fame, infamy and the trappings of wealth instead of publicity for the sake of satisfying universal need? Is mainstream culture no better than dark comedy, mimetic coercion, brainwashing and hogtied integrity?

I think you’re right about the points you make. I think mainstream culture is actually consumerism, or vice versa. Ultimately only the public can manage this problem by turning their backs on it. We don’t need more things, we need better things. The first step is to stop spending our money so carelessly.
