What do you think is the dividing factor between studying a subject vs the philosophy of a subject?
Say Philosophy of the mind vs sociology or psychology, all with their respected fields that can lead to each other but at the same time categorized differently.

Reply to Tiberiusmoon Study of X denotes formulating a model for explaining X-relevant data or phenomena. Study of the 'philosophy of X', on the other hand, denotes analyzing, clarifying, further determining, delimiting, systematizing ... the concepts and methods used to describe X.
